TEA CHAPEL

At Atelier Peter Zumthor,  hand crafted models are commonplace;  the office does not use renderings, 3D printing, nor any machine manufacturing. Handmade models take longer, require a more sophisticated thought process, a keen eye, and lend themselves better to change.  I know this because, as you will see throughout my portfolio, I have studied contrasting design and model building techniques, including machined and digital models.

However, unlike other firms that make handmade models, these models are also used as design tools.  A model has just as much importance in the design process, if not more, than a sketch, a plan, a section, or an idea.  Peter Zumthor, and the architects of the office, study the models to gleam design information, like the quality of light, the scale or atmosphere of a space, or even how the building’s form may synergize or battle the site’s context.  In many cases, changes can also be made quickly and viewed realistically, as many models are designed with pieces that can be pushed and pulled, or new pieces can be made.  This makes physical models a specialized, but thorough means of architectural investigation.
